Citaat van de maand / Quote of the month
“Whenever I’m really stuck, when I really need to go ‘in there’,
I sing the Chalisa and that connects me to Maharaj-ji, to Hanuman, to that powerful presence that’s deeper than any of that stuff. And, by touching that, I’m able to overcome whatever I’m stuck in…at least for 10 minutes.”
– Krishna Das
The way I sing, I try to let the mantra do the work. I simply pay attention to the prayer and repeat it with as much of my being as I can. I don’t try to manipulate emotions, I don’t try to manufacture any kind of feeling at all, it naturally arises. My understanding is that these mantras, these names, come from within us, they come from that place within that is deeper than the mind, deeper than thoughts, deeper than emotions. So, by turning our attention in that direction toward our soul, we move deeply into our true nature.”
– Krishna Das –
We are trained to believe that beautiful things are outside of us. With kirtan we chant words and phrases that come from a place inside of us, in any one of us. A place that is deeper than thought and emotion. It reveals the beauty that we have inside our own heart”
“Longing itself is the flow of love.
Don’t push it away.
That missing fills us so completely and that’s what it’s all about.”
The only thing we need to renounce is our self-hatred, judgment of ourselves + sense of unworthiness.
“The path that I’m on is not the renunciate path.
My path is to live in the world fully, in the best way possible.
Maharaj-ji said ‘Love Everyone. Serve Everyone. Remember God’.
He never told us to go to the jungle.”
If you keep breathing eventually something changes.”
I don’t know if there is God, I know there is Love – Unconditional Love -and I know I like to be in that love, and that maybe God.
All you have to do is look, and chanting reminds us to look.”
“If one has love within themselves, they will see it everywhere.
If one doesn’t have love within themselves, they won’t find it anywhere.”
It’s not unfair to say that the chanting of mantras is intended to be a completely mindless activity.
Yoga doesn’t ask us to believe in anything. It asks us to practice, and examine our experience until we can witness the truth in the book of our own heart. No one else can read it for you, or tell you what it means.
Whether you experience these mantras as ancient wisdom or psychological metaphor or complete nonsense is up to you.
“Ram… Shiva… these are not names of things. These are the Names of states of being. The state when the thoughts are not there.”
– Krishna Das-
“There are no answers to anything.
The answers happen when the question disappears.”
– Krishna Das-
“The gift you offer another person is just your being”
– Ram Dass –
“The heart is like a mirror. When we dust it off, we’re able to see ourselves. The dust is all our stuff – guilt, anger – this stuff is reflected back to us. Practice removes the dust from the mirror of our hearts.”
– Krishna Das-
“Who you think you are is the dust on your own heart. Practice clears the dust to reflect your true beauty.”
– Krishna Das-
“Love everyone. Serve everyone. Remember God”
~ Neem Karoli Baba-
“Chanting breaks down the difference between the inside and the outside. It’s about having a heart that never shuts down, that nothing can shut down.”
– Krishna Das-
“Devotion is a way of being, it’s not something you do. It’s dedication to finding awareness and Love. Chanting is like asanas for the mind and heart”
“Feeling good is not the point – it’s being connected so that the highs and lows don’t matter. You spend less time at the mercy of all those heavy negative thoughts.”
“Chanting just hits you and you want to be a part of it. That’s the point of this whole thing. That’s what cuts through all the ‘stuff’. You get lit up. You don’t have to know what it means.”
“We have to find a way to open our hearts, to quiet our minds, to let go our fears and our selfishness, our guilt and our anger and jealousy. Everything is already present in our own hearts. By repeating these Names over and over, we are moving ourselves into that place in us.”
The music and chanting help to deepen the silence, no effort is needed……..
Basically, punctuate the silent sitting with sound. As I said, the music is there to deepen the silence, not to entertain…… Your voice………is a door into peace and tranquillity…….
These activities arise from, and disappear into, the silence which you and your friends have gathered to enjoy.
–Deva Premal –
Everyday, every time is sit down at the harmonium, you think that I am just floating around in extacy? And I drop like little raindrops on the harmonium and I make beautiful sounds, and I go home and go to sleep and… Bull…., no!!! It ain’t the way it is! Every time I sit down it is practice.

Krishna Das, deze keer in antwoord op de vraag hoe belangrijk het is om de betekenis van de mantra’s / kirtans die je zingt te weten:
““It won’t hurt them! But the most important thing is that they should know that they’re singing to this loving presence that is always present, within and without, called by all these names. These are all names of God, these are all names of that place.

You are not gonna find God out there, you’ll only gonna find him in here.
And the only thing in the way is your own nonsense.
Neem Karoli Baba said: people come already taught by God. An interesting concept.
People just need to listen to themselves. The whole thing is to learn to trust yourself, learn to listen to your intuition. Pay attention to yourself, not see yourself through others’ eyes all the time. See what you want, who you are, what works for you. That’s the whole path, to listen to yourself.
If you bring up what is within you, what you bring up will set you free.
If you do not bring up what is within you, what you do not bring up will destroy you..

So what exactly should I be devoted to?
There is a text that says: ” If I am Shiva, and you are Shiva, and all is Shiva, then in which direction should I bow?”
“If it can be solved, there’s no need to worry,
and if it can’t be solved, worry is of no use.”
