Alan Watts: “I don’t know!” lezing met mooie beelden

Alan Watts belangrijkste boodschap in dit korte stukje “Give it away and it will come back” uit een lezing van hem is:
“I don’t know!” This “I don;t know” is the same as: I love, I let go, I don’t try to force or control, Humility.
Zeer handig bij Kirtan-zingen! :-)

Alan Watts – Give it away and it will come back

“That what I want, basically, what I really want is what you want. And I don’t know what you want. Surprise me.

That’s the kingship between I and Thou.

So when I ask, I go right down to the question, to be started with: what do I want!
And the answer is I don’t know!
When Bodhidharma was asked : Who are you?”, which is another form of the same question, he said ” I don’t know”.

Ans when you don’t know what

Godhead is never an object of its own knowledge.
Just Like Knife doesn’t cut itself.. Fire doesn’t burn itself.. Light doesn’t illuminate’s always an endless mystery to itself.. “I don’t know”

And when you don’t know what you want.. You reach the state of desirelessness. When you really don’t know, you see, there is Beginning stage of not knowing and ending stage of not knowing.. In the beginning stage you don’t know what you want because you haven’t thought about it.. or you only have thought superficially.. Then when somebody forces you to think about it..and you go through and say you like this and that.. and that’s the middle stage..

Then you get beyond that you ask Is that what I really want.?. In the end you say, no I don’t thing that’s it.. I might be satisfied with it for a while but it’s not really what I want.

Why don’t you know what you really want..

Two reasons:
1. You have it
2. You don’t know yourself, because you never can:

This “I don’t know” is same thing as I love, I let go, I don’t try to Force or control. It’s the same thing as humility and so that Upanishads would say: If you think you understand “Brahman”.. you do not understand and have yet to be instructed further.. if you know that you do not understand.. then you truly understand.. For the Brahman is unknown to those who know it and known to those who know it not..

And anytime when you cease to cling on to yourself, you have an access to power..Cause you are wasting energy all the time in self defense.. trying to manage things.. Trying to conform things to your will.. the moment you stop doing that “the wasted energy is available”

Therefore you are in that sense you are the one with the divine principle.. you have the energy..

When you are trying however to act as if you are god that is to say you don’t trust anybody.. you are the lose that divine energy… because what you are doing is simply defending yourself..

So then the principle is “the more you give it away the more it comes back”

So you say I don’t have the courage to give it away.. I’m afraid.. you can only overcome that by realizing you better give it away… because there is no way holding on to it..
The meaning of the fact you see that everything is dissolving constantly.. that we all falling apart.. We all in the process of constant Death..

The fact that “everything in decay is your helper”.. “that is allowing you that you don’t have to Let go.. Because there is nothing to hold on to”.. “It’s achieved for you by the process of nature..”

Once you see you don’t have a prayer.. it’s all washed up. You will vanish and leave not a rag behind.. and you really get with that.. suddenly you find you have the power.. this enormous access of energy.. and this is the power u didn’t grab forcefully.. It came in entirely the opposite way.. and because it is the power which came to you in entirely the opposite way.. It’s the power with which you can be trusted..
